Road Transport Operators to Our Kampung Long Banyok

They have made the trip to our kampong from Miri as convenience as possible with the existing of these people. They are the transport operators and travel with 4X4 WD off road vehicle to our kampong with RM60 per head for single trip.

    Thanks for being the first person to drop your comment.

    I am not sure whether to include the contact phone no of post office (ASB transaction), banks, clinic or hospital, police etc located in Marudi and Long Lama. Some of us may want to pre-check whether the office is open or not before going there.

    If there is such request, please let me know. I also welcome you provide the phone number for convenience.

    :: OPPORTUNITY

    We have a beautiful longhouse in the Baram area. This has been said by the visiting ministers and VIPs to our longhouse.
    Our longhouse is located at a strategic location in the Baram area and accesible by road and river.

    You will find a fantastic journey heading to our kampung by cruising the river and passing through the thick jungle.
    Our people welcome everyone to our longhouse and you will find it as a good place to experience the rural life. With the hospitality of our people, we hope it is the first step to foster a good relationship with whoever coming to our kampung.

    Taking 3-4 hours by river and land transport from Miri, it is a memorable journey especially for the first timer.
    This message is also addressed to any interested party or travel agent out there who wish to collaborate with our kampung and develop it for home stay program or any tourist facility.

    "Long Banyok" vs
    "Lulo Banyok"

    In the Baram area, our longhouse is commonly called as "Long Banyok" instead of "Lulo Banyok".

    However, there is a debate whether we should call our longhouse with "Long Banyok" or "Lulo Banyok". In our language "long" means "muara" and "lulo" means "tanjung", compared with the Malay language.

    Because our kampung is residing at "tanjung", it should be called as "Lulo Banyok" instead of "Long Banyok". In our longhouse, our old folks still call our kampung as "Lulo Banyok" because they know it resides at "tanjung".
    However, for many other kampungs located along the Baram river, they reside at the "long" of the streams and because of that reason, their kampungs are named after that. In this case, it carries the correct name.

    As these two words do not make any significant impact to us, we still accept whether our kampung is called "Long Banyok" or "Lulo Banyok".

    We believe this misinterpretation arose because of a strong likeness of these two words and our norm who used to live side-by-side with other Kenyah and Kayan group in the Baram area and have many in common including our words.




    :: ABOUT US

    1. "Murik" This term had been used referring to our group by Charles Hose in his books during his residency in Claude Town (now Marudi) in 1890s.

    2. "Ngurek" This term had been used by Philip Ngau Jalong in the Sarawak Museum Journal in 1980s depicting our origin from East Kalimantan and later migrating to Long Banyok in the Baram area. Re-used in officiating the new constructed kampung on 25 July 2009.

    3. "Ngurik" This term had been used by Jeffry Jalong in his book "Sape" and "Kalong" when referring to our group.

    4. "Morek" This term had been used by the present Sarawak Government and official documents referring to the primary school in our kampung known as SK Morek.

    Regardless we are called as "Murik", "Ngurek", "Ngurik" or "Morek", these terms refer to the same group. The error arose in registering our name was believed influenced by the accent (pronunciation) of our old folks and the wrong translation made by the party recording our group.
